In our last blog we discussed how what evenutually became the modern barcoding system first developed. Joseph Woodward’s idea was eventually issued a patent in 1952 but as you can see from the patent Woodward didn’t call his invention a barcoding system. Instead it was patented as a classifying apparatus and method. There was a problem though.

The technology needed for this apparatus to be incorporated didn’t exist yet.
Woodward had been an employee at IBM and he tried to have his company develop this patent. While IBM realized the potential that such a system offered, as Woodward stated in this article with CNN he “was way ahead of the technology.” Indeed he was as we’ll find out in our next installment that the first item to be scanned didn’t occur until more than two decades later.
These incorporation problems that existed in the last century are extinct today.
